Joel Oleson SharePoint Presentation Recap

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

View entire galleryHERE

SharePoint Evangelist Joel Oleson was the special guest tonight as he presented 10 ways to avoid failed deployments on the SharePoint platform.

CommVault and Bamboo Solutions provided sponsorship for the event which included t-shirts and other giveaway items.

Representatives from the leading SharePoint companies such as AvePoint were in attendance.

Joel’s presentation is loose and relaxed and he likes to use helpful metaphors and analogies to describe SharePoint and its many facets.

Video of the presentation will be available on Collaborpedia and www.baltimoresug.org

After the presentation, myself, BSPUG co-founder Eric Harlan and Joel all drove over to a local eatery and watched Florida take home the National Championship.

I was really impressed with Joel’s understanding and application of social media. Prior to meeting him, I thought that his combination of SharePoint expertise combined with his presence online is the reason he has achieved Rockstar status as a SharePoint Evangelist.

In order to spread the good word about SharePoint, you have to meet organizations where they communicate and share ideas. Joel is the ideal case study for that notion.

All-in-All, a great night for all who attended and we look to host great events such as this in the future.

Official Presentation Overview

It’s been a great year here at BSPUG. We’ve turn 1 this year, had some Great
sessions and Great Speakers come through and our code camp was a huge hit.
Let’s all Cross our fingers that next fiscal year will be just such a
success.

Speaking of next year’s success, we’ve got some awesome news.  On January
8th (one week up from our normal date) we will be having Joel Oleson come
out to speak at BSPUG!

For our new members, we will be meeting at UMBC Tech Center, 1450 Rolling
Road, Halethorpe, MD. Doors open at 6pm for food and refreshments.

Joel will be giving a presentation on 10 Steps to Success, Avoiding Failed
SharePoint Deployments. Joel is a SharePoint evangelist. Joel’s well-read
blog, sharepointjoel.com is one of the top IT blogs and is the number one
SharePoint IT blog. It is consumed daily in over 102 countries.

At Quest Software he is guiding the strategy of the SharePoint group and is
working on new designs for tools to help IT administrators.

As most of you know, we strive to be as consistent as possible and we only
mess with our meeting dates if there is a very good reason, we understand
this is very close to the holiday season and a double whammy is it’s a week
ahead of our normal scheduled meet. However, if you can make it for this
special guest presentation please do, its going to be a good one!

The session will be recorded and photos will be available on the BSPUG site as well as here on collaborpedia.com

6pm kicks off our food and beverages for the evening. Presentation will begin at 6:30pm

Event Watch: Net Tuesday Philly Presents: Blogging for NonProfits

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

The Philly tech scene is showing some signs of great events and wonderful people who attend and contribute to make Philadelphia a tech community on the rise.

January?s Net Tuesday will be about Blogging for Nonprofits.

Whether you?re thinking about starting a blog or want to make your existing blog more effective, we?re planning a program that will :

feature nonprofits that are using blogs successfully to raise awareness, raise funds, find volunteers and achieve their mission — and how they are doing it
share techniques, strategies, tools and resources for effective nonprofit blogging
explore thorny issues , such as how to reconcile the need for a blog to have a personal voice, yet also represent the many voices of an organization

We’ll be using an “open panel” format, featuring some local non-profit bloggers, including:

Andrew Schwalm and the First Person Arts blog and Malcolm X Park Blog
Daniel Pantano and the Academy of Vocal Arts Opera Blog
Judah Ferst and the Buzzing 4 Change blog
Larry Blumenthal and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in Princeton blog
Maryann Devine and the smArts and Culture blog

In addition to an informative, interactive discussion about issues confronting new and veteran nonprofit bloggers, we’ll have lots of practical tools and opportunities.

Nate Gasser, of Rock River Star, will demonstrate creating a new blog during the evening with one of the attendees (maybe you?).

We will also introduce an idea to provide ongoing support and encouragement for new and current nonprofit bloggers.

This promises to be another intersting, fun and useful Net Tuesday event.
