Outlook Social Connector Brings Your Networks to the Enterprise

Outlook Social Connector Brings Your Networks to the Enterprise

Written by: Shadeed Eleazer

The trend of enhancing the user experience from inside his/her inbox continues as Microsoft has announced the BETA release of the Outlook Social Connector. The timing of its release comes at a perfect time for the software giant, as the tech industry is buzzing over the announcement of the Windows Phone 7 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain this week.

For a corporation that many viewed as ‘behind-the-times’ in comparison with rival Apple, the recent announcements have many wondering with enthusiasm how the combination of Windows Phone 7, Outlook Social Connector, and the enhancements of the 2010 Suite of Office Applications will shake up the marketplace.

OSC connects the user to the social experience via a provider that connect the social and business networks that you utilize. The surprise in this initial offering is that it has partnered with LinkedIn amongst the other networks introduced which are: Facebook, MySpace.

Impact on Productivity
How will information workers be impacted by the increase in “social media noise” within their respective inboxes? Many organizations have completely blocked social media within corporate settings and have been either reluctant or dismissive about creating a solid Social Media policy that addresses the upcoming changes in the workplace. Is there a business reason for employees to use Facebook or MySpace? Time will reveal these answers as decisions will need to be made.

Particularly (but not only) in the German speaking world (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) Xing is much more popular than LinkedIn for professional social networking. Any chance to get a connector for Xing? And what about Facebook? I have over 200 friends there, at least half of them I know professionally…

Microsoft announced the Outlook Social Connector as early as Nov 2009 but additional testing has lead to the integration of Facebook amongst additional new features.

Features Include:

  • The People Pane - This includes a profile appearance of your friends/colleagues when you receive a message from them.
  • Rich history - Instant access to a history of recent message traffic and attachments from each incoming/outgoing message.
  • Activities Real-time updates from social networks
  • SharePoint 2010 Integrate your Social networks right into the revamped MySite. I believe that Windows Phone 7, SharePoint 2010, and Outlook 2010 will be a killer trio. Joel Oleson put together a great post on Win Phone 7 and SharePoint 2010 capabilities
  • Extend A The OSC Software Development Kit will enable developers to integrate a variety of social networks. The possibilities to build a true Social Media Center are becoming apparent.

From the Microsoft Outlook site regarding compatibility:

“NOTE: The Outlook Social Connector included in the Office 2010 Beta is not compatible with the beta providers currently available online. Office 2010 Beta users must install the Outlook Social Connector 32-bit Beta in order to successfully use the social network providers currently available. Also, you cannot install the 32-bit OSC Beta on Outlook 2010 Beta 64-bit.”

Download the 32 bit connector here.

System Requirements
OSC is supported by the following Operating Systems: Windows 7; Windows Vista; Windows XP
OSC is supported on the 32-bit version of Outlook 2010 beta, Outlook 2003 and 2007

Gigatribe Releases New Features Aimed at Students

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Written by: Shadeed Eleazer

GigaTribe has announced the rollout of new features designated for the upcoming school year. The ability to share class documents and share course materials is a major improvement from previous releases.
GigaTribe has also enhanced video streaming by integrating DivX. Students can now instantly stream DivX videos. GigaTribe features a secure “Private Area” that enables students to remotely access entire personal video libraries from their apartment, dorm, Starbucks etc leveraging a web browser.

Excitement is high within the GigaTribe corporate offices. “GigaTribe is clearly the best solution to share private files safely. It helps schools save precious time and money,” said Alexis Leseigneur, Gigatribe CTO and co-founder. “GigaTribe is already a must-have software for teachers and students alike, especially during the ‘Back to School’ period.”

Cost
GigaTribe is very inexpensive, which benefits the ever shrinking educational budgets facing most counties and school districts across the US. GigaTribe “Ultimate” is priced at only $4.99/month or $29.95 a year, GigaTribe Basic is available for free.

The “Back to School” suite of features include the following enhancements:
• Training Videos: Educational institutions now have the ability to post private teacher training videos complete with real children in a classroom setting, without having to spend the time and money to blur children’s faces, as needed with other un-secure networks.
• Teachers Collaboration: Teachers can share courses materials with other teachers.
• Remote Access: Students can remotely access their computers while on campus, at the library, café, or other location with WiFi.
• Student Collaboration: Students can share study materials, videos, and photos with classmates online.

Online Academy for Software Entrepreneurs Launched

Learn the ropes at The Micropreneur Academy
Written by: Shadeed Eleazer
Rob Walling has developed what is billed as the first online academy for software entrepreneurs entitled The Micropreneur Academy (www.Micropreneur.com).

What Is It?
The Micropreneur Academy is both parts web based community and online training program geared towards practicing and potential software entrepreneurs. Through peer-to-peer advice and courses, the objective is to transform software startups from ground floor to launch in as little as 4 months.

The creator, Rob Walling (www.SoftwareByRob.com), is a full-time Serial Micropreneur based in Fresno, California. Rob is the main force behind the Academy, but guest contributors include Bob Walsh, author of “Micro-ISV: From Vision to Reality”, and Ian Ozsvald of ProCasts.co.uk.

What will Members Learn?
Phase I begins with defining Micropreneur goals and progresses through product development followed by business development, accounting, and venture capital processes. Each module contains up to 10 individual lessons.

What Apps Have Been Developed from Micropreneur Academy members?
Products such as social photo sharing app Pixur.me, online mind mapping tool ThoughtMuse, web based proposal software BidSketch, domain name idea engine HotNameList, foreclosure listing site flip-start, and several others.

Breakdown of Modules
Module 1: Introduction to Micropreneurship
Exchanging software for cash is the revenue model most of us think of, but there are many models available for one-person companies. In this lesson we look at your options and discuss the best time to use each approach.

Module 2: Building the Right Product
Estimating demand is one thing, but watching real people visit your website and decide whether to buy is another. This lesson looks at how, for less than $100, you can test traffic, click through rates and conversions before you build your product.

Module 3: Taking the Risk Out of Buying a Product
In this lesson we’ll look at how three purchase transactions played out.

Module 4: Creating a Killer Sales Website
Privacy policies, terms of use, copyright.should you bother with any of these? How can you create the legal documents you need without forking over a month’s rent to your lawyer?

Module 5: Proven Methods for Traffic Generation
Viral marketing has arguably the highest ROI of any form of internet marketing. Add social applications to the mix and you have the potential to very quickly generate a substantial number of users for your application.

Module 6: Growing Profits through Analytics
A/B and multivariate testing are powerful, but how do you determine what to vary in these tests? This lesson takes an in-depth look at specific approaches to increasing conversion rates.

Module 7: Launch and Beyond
The day after launch you’re going to start receiving feature requests. How do you manage them, develop the product and provide support all at the same time? This lesson takes a detailed look at how to make it happen.

Module 8: Case Studies
I built and launched a product a few years ago that went viral and garnered several hundred links in a few days from high-profile sites. The success was great but I had no idea how to monetize it.

Module 9: More on Building the Right Product
It would be nice to say “Micropreneurs never give up,” but the real answer is that sometimes an idea just isn’t going to fly. This lesson looks at how and when to make that decision.

Module 10: More Proven Methods for Traffic Generation
If you choose your niche wisely you can often own many of the top search keywords through SEO alone. But often there are related keywords that don’t directly apply to your product website. That’s where Satellite websites come in.

Module 11: Your Business

Cost of Membership
The Academy is $97 per month

What is a Micropreneur?
A Micropreneur is a highly technical entrepreneur who values time, location and income independence; in other words, the ability to control when and where she works, and how much money she makes. Micropreneurs automate ruthlessly and use outsourcing extensively.

Micropreneurship is about building and marketing niche software products and web applications.
The goals of a Micropreneur are simple: retain the ability to write code (if you choose), support yourself financially with no employees, and work when and where you like.

SharePoint Saturday Charlotte (Recap)

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

The interesting aspect of SharePoint Saturday Charlotte, NC was that the bulk of the
speakers came in from outside of the Charlotte area. Event organizer, Senior consultant Dan Lewis
did an outstanding job of building awareness for the event, which was the first SharePoint
Saturday to be held in the Carolina region.

SP Saturday Charlotte featured very interesting sessions overall of speakers and a rising
group of SharePoint professionals that honed their presentation skills through
including Doug Ware, J Dan Attis, Laura Rogers, Becky Isserman, Dan Usher, Michael Lotter,

In the Speaker’s Lounge, Doug Ware previewed some early functionality add-ons for his product
Skinner 2, which is the second release of the design tool geared toward SharePoint branding.
Skinner allows visual editing of SharePoint sites through step-by-step preview mode and exports
the changes into a file which can then be deployed to SharePoint.

My topic was centered around Transitioning into SharePoint Careers, which was a session devoted to
outlining the roadmap from a beginning SharePoint professional to a Senior professional.
The issue that most professionals face is they are given a task to deploy SharePoint and there is
a learning curve associated with that.

I think the move to have some of the heavier hitters with heavy influence in the Microsoft community close out the event such as Microsoft’s Michael Ganotti, was a great decision in terms of keeping attendees
enthused and present for the entire event. Ganotti delivered a great presentation on SharePoint and Web 2.0 and outlined some enhancements that exist for customizing SharePoint

What makes SharePoint Saturday so special is the viral nature of the event Overall, great job done by the organizational team.

Webcast Alert: Effective Backup and Restore Strategies for Your SharePoint Service

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Today’s Webcast, hosted by SharePointJoel.com author and SharePoint Evangelist Joel Oleson, is a topic that many organizations need to take more time to figure out a strategy for, backup and recovery procedures. My golden rule that applies to most organizations that have implemented SharePoint is: “If the right person, loses the wrong document, then it is cause for trouble
- Mr.Shadeed

Webcast: Effective Backup and Restore Strategies for Your SharePoint Service

Date: Thursday, February 19, 2009
Time: 8 a.m. Pacific / 11 a.m. Eastern / 4 p.m. United Kingdom / 5 p.m. Central Europe

Chaos in SharePoint backup and recovery arises when you’re not sure where your data is or when to back it up. When this occurs, users have to wait weeks for IT to retrieve their lost data. Join SharePoint expert Joel Oleson to learn how following a consistent backup and recovery governance plan can streamline processes, help you meet SLAs, and keep users productive. He and other special guests will review goals for developing the plan, provide you with prescriptive guidance to achieve them, and describe native and third-party tools that can help along the way.

Webcast Recap

Brent Ozar provided a good perspective from the DBA side of the house while Joel delivered the presentation on various strategies and considerations for SharePoint backup.
Many were probably expecting 10 minutes of strategy and 50 minutes of sales demo for this webcast, but the majority of the presentation was strategy and there was mention of other leading vendors as well in the SharePoint space.
Overall, I thought the webcast was put together well, time ran short at the end so Joel offered to answer all questions directly on his blog. www.sharepointjoel.com

Ignite Baltimore #2 Recap (Video Coming Today)

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Ignite Baltimore is one event where you cannot take the RSVP for granted as it was a waiting list for the standing room only crowd for the second gathering of entrepreneurs, intellectuals, techies, and political figures for a round of 16 speakers sharing their ideas ranging from art changing the world to being more happy and productive.

The Windup Space on W. North Ave was a great host, pizza was served for all, and the attendees were eager to chat, mingle, and make connections offline with many of the greater Baltimore area’s brightest minds.

I think that Ignite is one of the better examples of keeping the “big picture in perspective” alongside entrepreneurial pursuits and the rage that is social media. The networking aspect was a good touch and Ignite kept the “human element” that people are what make a great community in the forefront.

The variety of topics that bounced from each speaker kept the event fresh. The automatically changing slides every 15 seconds maintains the element of surprise.
Collaborpedia was in the building filming in coverage and support of Ignite Baltimore and later on today we will begin to debut the footage from the event.
Proposals are already pouring in for speakers to head up Session #3 which will be held in June.

Snag It 9 Installation Guide

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

I routinely create Technical Manuals and End-User documentation for clients and for the enjoyment of providing resources for people within my network and community.
The sign of good documentation is when the doc is being used long after the employee has left the company or revisions are released as technology changes.

I recently created an installation guide/walk-through on SnagIt 9 that I wanted to share with the readers of Collaborpedia.
SnagIt enables users to enhance their presentation and information gathering capabilities by enabling screen capture of literally anything you see on your screen.

New features include Open Capture Tray, Tagging screen captures, and enhanced layout features to the toolbar and editor.

SnagIt can be used for projects ranging from how-to guides, PowerPoints, sponsorship packets and more. You can add audio to your images to create an enhanced slideshow.
